The Luminosity Dependence of Uv Absorption in Agn
نویسنده
چکیده
We describe the results of a survey of the UV absorption properties of the Boroson & Green sample of AGN, which extends from the Seyfert (MV ≃ −21) to the luminous quasar (MV ≃ −27) level. The survey is based mostly on HST archival data available for > ∼ 1/2 of the 87 sample objects. Our main result is that soft X-ray weak quasars (SXWQs, 10 AGN with αox ≤ −2) show the strongest UV absorption at a given luminosity, and their maximum outflow velocity, vmax, is strongly correlated with MV (rS = −0.95). This suggests that vmax is largely set by the luminosity, as expected for radiation-pressure driven outflows. Luminous SXWQs have preferentially low [O III] luminosity, which suggests they are physically distinct from unabsorbed AGN, while non-SXWQs with UV absorption are consistent with being drawn from the unabsorbed AGN population. We also find an indication that vmax/vBLR increases with L/LEdd, as expected for radiation-pressure driven outflows. This relation and the vmax vs. MV relation may indicate that the radiation-pressure force multiplier increases with luminosity, and that the wind launching radius in non-SXWQs is ∼ 10 times larger than in SXWQs. Does the obscured AGN fraction really depend on luminosity?
We use a sample of 151 local non-blazar active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected from the INTEGRAL all-sky hard X-ray survey to investigate if the observed declining trend of the fraction of obscured (i.e. showing X-ray absorption) AGN with increasing luminosity is mostly an intrinsic or selection effect. Using a torus-obscuration model, we demonstrate that in addition to negative bias, due to abs...
متن کاملPiecing Together the X-ray Background: Bolometric Corrections for Active Galactic Nuclei
The X-ray background can be used to constrain the accretion history of Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), with the SMBH mass density related to the energy density due to accretion. A knowledge of the hard X-ray bolometric correction, κ2−10keV is a vital input into these studies, as it allows us to constrain the parameters of the accretion responsible for SMBH grow...
متن کاملEmission and absorption in Narrow - Line Seyfert 1
The emission and absorption attributes of the UV-blue nuclear spectra of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are analyzed based on high quality archival HST observations. Measurements from composite spectra as well as from individual sources reveal differences from the more general AGN samples: NLS1s have steeper (redder) UV-blue continua. Objects with UV line absorption show redder spect...
متن کاملThe XMM-Newton Wide Angle Survey (XWAS): the X-ray spectrum of type-1 AGN
Aims. We discuss the broad band X-ray properties of one of the largest samples of X-ray selected type-1 AGN to date (487 objects in total), drawn from the XMM-Newton Wide Angle Survey (XWAS). The objects presented in this work cover 2-10 keV (rest-frame) luminosities from ∼ 1042 − 1045 erg s−1 and are detected up to redshift ∼4. We constrain the overall properties of the broad band continuum, s...
متن کاملHard X-ray luminosity function and absorption distribution of nearby AGN: INTEGRAL all-sky survey
Aims. We study the hard X-ray luminosity function and absorption distribution of local (z ∼< 0.1) active galactic nuclei (AGN) and discuss the implications for AGN cosmological evolution and for the cosmic X-ray background (CXB). Methods. We use the INTEGRAL all-sky hard X-ray survey to perform a statistical study of a representative sample of nearby AGN. Our entire all-sky sample consists of 1...
